Check road conditions and weather: Regularly check the website of the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration and the weather forecast – these are the most important measures for your safety while driving.
Parking Fees: At many attractions and city parking lots in Akureyri and Reykjavík, a fee applies. Payment is usually made via QR code, a link, or directly at ticket machines. However, paying for parking is also easy and convenient by app. If you do not pay immediately, the invoice will be sent to us — including late fees and service charges. You, as the renter, must cover this increased total amount.
Akureyri Tunnel Fee: A fee applies for the tunnel in Akureyri (Vaðlaheiðargöng). Payment is made online via tunnel.is
Narrow roads & one-lane bridges: Many roads, including the Ring Road, are narrow with one-lane bridges. Vehicles must yield to the vehicle that arrives first.
Gravel roads: Keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead – there is a risk of stone chips. Always drive carefully and at a suitable speed; on gravel, the driver can easily lose control of the vehicle, especially near the road edges.
F-roads: These highland roads are only accessible with all-wheel-drive vehicles and are closed in winter — sometimes well into summer.
Roundabouts: In Iceland, vehicles in the inner lane of a roundabout have right of way over those in the outer lane.
Headlights: Low beam headlights must be on all year round – day and night.
Seat belts: Wearing seat belts is required by law for all passengers.
Lane use/overtaking: In Iceland, you drive on the right and overtake on the left.
Wind: Watch out for strong wind gusts, especially when opening car doors. Damage from doors slamming in the wind is common and expensive.
Animals: Be careful in rural areas – sheep, horses, or reindeer may be on the road.
Speed limits: 90 km/h on asphalt, 80 km/h on gravel, 50 km/h in towns. Blue signs show recommended speeds. Stick to the limits – speed cameras are common and fines are high.
Refueling: Gas stations can be far apart. Refuel regularly.
Off-road driving: Off-road driving is prohibited.
Child seats: Children must be secured in a suitable child seat appropriate for their age and weight.
Right of way: Right before left. At unmarked intersections, vehicles from the right have the right of way. Emergency vehicles and buses always have priority.
Slow traffic on rural roads: Farm vehicles and livestock crossings are common on rural roads. Drive carefully and patiently — it’s part of Icelandic country life.
Tunnels: Tunnels often have a lower speed limit than outside. Watch the signs – lighting and road conditions can change suddenly.
Black ice: Ice can form in some regions even in summer.
Keep distance: Keep a large distance to the vehicle ahead – braking distances are much longer on ice and gravel, and flying stones can damage paint and windows.
Alcohol & drugs while driving: Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly prohibited in Iceland.
